All about Planters
On the Shoulders of Giants, a history of the Anglican church established by New England Planters in Kings County, Nova Scotia launches June 19 at 1 p.m., just in time for the Anglican Parish of Cornwallis’, located in Eastern Kings County, two big milestones.
2010 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the parish by New England Planters in 1760 and the 200th anniversary of the parish church, St. John’s Cornwallis, Church Street in Port Williams.
A comprehensive history has been written about the parish and its two St. John’s churches (the first built at Fox Hill in 1770, and the present building, erected between 1804 and 1810). On the Shoulders of Giants tells the little known story of the Parish of Cornwallis, established by a small number of New England Planters and their leader, Major Samuel Starr, in 1760. Members of the Starr family were active in the life of St. John’s Cornwallis until the 1990s.
Other congregants included Abraham Gesner, whose discovery of kerosene provided the foundation for today’s global petroleum industry; Dr. Charles Best, co-discoverer of insulin; the Hon. Charles Ramage Prescott, the father of the apple industry in the Annapolis Valley; and Mary Clerk Peake, the first woman in Canada’s armed forces to be killed in World War II.
Each set of books is $25 plus taxes. The book will be launched at a public event at the Parish Hall, 1105 Church Street (corner of Church St and Hwy 358 in Port Williams).

Conlin tells a pirate tale
Dan Conlin is a historian, storyteller and curator of marine history at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. He will be at the Harbourville Community Hall June 25 at 7 p.m. to present an illustrated reading of his book, Pirates of the Atlantic: Robbery, murder and mayhem off the Canadian East Coast.
Conlin created a popular exhibit on pirates for the museum, and used much of this research for this book. He grew up in Welsford and Turner's Brook, so the pirates of this area have special interest to him.
His talks have always been very popular, so come early. There will also be a door prize and refreshments. To help support Harbourville Restoration Society events, freewill offerings are appreciated.
