Fame this week

Fame the musical is on in Wolfville this week.

In the 1980s in New York, several teenage hopefuls audition for the prestigious school of performing arts in the hopes of making their dreams of fame come true.

Adapted and directed by Kerri Leier, this show showcases the hard work of 17 young local actors who have been attending Edalene's third Musical Theatre Intensive Camp. With show-stopping choreography by Tracy Fritz Nasson and Melissa Vidito at the musical helm, this is a show not to be missed.

FAME! is on stage August 25 at 7:30 p.m. and August 26 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville. Tickets are $5 for children under 16, $7 for parents and $20 for groups of four. For tickets, call 697-2515 or email jump_musical@hotmail.com.

End of summer

The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts is hosting a Country Supper & Barn Dance August 27 at 6 p.m. Enjoy a chicken barbecue (veggie options available) with neighbours, make new friends, then dance the night away at a family-friendly, all-ages barn dance. A caller will be on hand to keep the rhythm flowing and the toes a-tapping. We encourage pre-booking so you aren’t disappointed: 582-3842.

September Serenade

Wolfville audiences can look forward to a program entitled "September Serenade" with renowned soprano Wendy Nielsen from New Brunswick and pianist Robert Kortgaard.

September 17, they will present some of their favourite autumnal works from the song repertoire, opera stage and music theatre. From Mozart to Puccini, Strauss to Sondheim, with some Spanish sizzle in between.

Whether in concert, opera or recital, Canadian soprano Nielsen enchants audiences with her sumptuous voice and engaging presence.

Recent highlights in her stellar career include a critically acclaimed role debut as the title role in Calgary Opera’s Ariadne auf Naxos and a return to the Metropolitan Opera for the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Nielsen has a long history with the Metropolitan Opera, where she debuted as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and has sung Micaela in Carmen, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanna and the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Nielsen debuted with the New York Philharmonic in Penderzcki’s Seven Gates of Jerusalem conducted by Kurt Masur and returned for Dov Seltzer's Lament to Yitzhak at the Lincoln Center Festival.

She is a recipient of the Order of New Brunswick.

Kortgaard was born in Regina and completed his bachelor and master's degrees at the Juilliard School in New York City. As a recipient of arts awards from the Canada Council, he continued his musical studies in Italy and England.

He has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has become one of the most in-demand colleagues of Canada's most esteemed vocalists, and is a frequent partner of sopranos Measha Brueggergosman, mezzo-soprano Jean Stilwell and cabaret diva Patricia O'Callaghan. He is now artistic director of the Indian River Festival in Prince Edward Island.
