Rolling into town
Fans of the defunct Vegetarian Lunchbox in Wolfville can check out the Main Street restaurant’s successor: The Rolled Oat.
Former Lunchbox employee Amanda Ferguson, along with Lindsay Reid, opened the breakfast and lunch destination July 21. Local, organic, vegan and gluten-free choices are on the menu, and works from local artists adorn the airy little café’s walls.
“We want it to be pretty,” Reid says, “like you’re sitting at your friend’s house.”
The tiny space is pretty, and seems acres bigger than its former incarnation, even with the addition of new tables and a counter crafted by wood artist John Lynch using reclaimed wood from a historic Kings County farmhouse.
Reid and Ferguson - who both came to town from Port Colborne, Ontario a few years ago - tasted success at the Wolfville Farmers’ Market Taste of the Valley competition just after the Oat opened, winning an award for a raspberry tart made with fruit from Stewarts’ Organic Farm.
The Rolled Oat is open Monday to Saturday and is cash only. More details are available on the restaurant’s Facebook site.
Local food gets provincial notice
Two Kings County names are on the list of six finalists in the third annual Spirit Nova Scotia Local Food Award.
The competition, co-sponsored by Spirit Nova Scotia and Select Nova Scotia, celebrates individuals and organizations who have made a significant contribution to the local food movement in Nova Scotia. Finalists were chosen based on their commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, promotion of local food, creativity and innovation.
Patricia Bishop and Josh Oulton’s Taproot Farm in Port Williams is nominated in the producer category and the Wolfville Farmers’ Market is a finalist in the non-profit category.

Tiger roaring in? And more for Granite Drive...
A Giant Tiger store is coming to New Minas.
Kim Sharpe of Plazacorp Retail Properties confirms Giant Tiger will join Micheal’s craft supplies at the company’s Silver Fox property.
Giant Tiger, a Canadian company with 195 franchises, announced last week the 20,000-square-foot store will open October 16. This is the third Nova Scotia location, joining Halifax and Truro. A fourth store is planned for Bridgewater.
"We are all very excited about our new location in New Minas," Andy Gross, the company’s president and chief executive officer, says. "Giant Tiger is an affordable and convenient destination for fashion clothing, groceries and everyday basic needs. It is a clean, neat, bright and friendly place to shop.”
Sally Beauty is opening in the Granite Drive part of the site and Plaza’s website shows a Wicker Emporium next to the new Reitman’s store.
Expecting massage
Two massage therapists are joining forces to share one space in Berwick.
Angela Parsons moved her Aylesford massage therapy practice to the 141 Commercial Street property next to Spoil Me Rotten Maternity August 1.
It’s the perfect spot for Emily Rogers, too. She owns Valley Perinatal Services.
“I’m a massage therapist specializing in pre- and post-natal massages.”
Rogers also offers birth and postpartum doula services and community-based support for new and expanding families, including playgroups, workshops and events.
Valley Perinatal will join Parsons in the new location in a few weeks, after Rogers takes time out to welcome her own new baby.
To book an appointment with Parsons, call 300-0096. Rogers can be reached at 698-1275.
