Future of New Minas Zellers space still unclear

Despite rumours circulating in New Minas, Staples does not plan to move across Commercial Street into the County Fair Mall.

The Zellers’ location at the mall will close as of March 16, 2013, Hudson’s Bay Company’s head office confirmed last week.

News in August of the department’s stores demise led to local speculation about what might fill the space.

“We won’t be looking into the Zellers space,” Staples Canada spokeswoman Valerie Outmezguine said Dec. 4. “We renovated the New Minas location two years ago.”

That makes it unlikely, she added, that the company would want to move the store at this time.

The New Minas Zellers’ lease was not acquired by Target under an earlier deal.

Calls and e-mails to County Fair Mall owner Crombie REIT were not returned before press time.
