Glace Bay woman assigned date set in fraud case

SYDNEY — An employee with the Department of Community Services in Glace Bay is scheduled to appear in provincial court Dec. 10 charged with 23 counts of fraud and forgery.

Michelle MacEachern, 42, of Centreville Road in Reserve Mines, is charged with 12 counts of fraud over $5,000 and 11 counts of uttering forged documents.

The offences allegedly occurred between June 2013 and February. The fraud involves an amount exceeding $100,000.

The fraud charges allege that MacEachern opened false assistance claims and deposited the money into her own bank account.

The forgery charges involve filing false direct deposit applications and change of address applications, along with depositing $2,400 into her own account.

MacEachern, who is off work on sick leave, has been released on conditions that include refraining from alcohol and having no association with anyone with a criminal record.
