Known for his ear to ear grin and a positive attitude, Jerry Thorne is this year’s recipient of the Biggs Award

The Biggs Award is given to a client of Flowercart’s Community Employment Services who has demonstrated skills, work habits, and attitudes which have had a positive effect on others; a client who has earned a good reputation with supervisors and co-workers and who has met or exceeded his or her employer’s expectations.

Thorne, who moved to the Valley in the summer of 2011 and was referred to the Partners in employment in September, has an estensive background in the food service industry. In October, 2011, he interviewed for a position at Jungle Jims and was hired immediately by owner Joey Murphy. He’s been a part of the team ever since.

“Joey once told me that despite Jerry’s physical challenges he does tasks and attempts to do things that employees without these challenges are reluctant to try,” said Juanita Dukeshire, job developer with Partners in Employment Outreach.

Dukeshire said Thorne was excited to receive the award. On his behalf, she recently read the following statement at the annual general meeting: “I like my job and my co-workers. I get lots of good compliments from Joey and other staff members. I am happy there and am doing more things.”

This is the way my cousin has always been and I have never seen him not try his best to be a "regular" person or let his disability get in the way of him doing his best
