Port Williams resident Maryann Cogswell celebrated her 80th birthday on Nov. 6 by hosting a skating party for her family and friends at the Acadia Arena.
Several of her eight grandsons were happy to squire her around the ice surface, while daughters Esther and Marjorie beamed from the sidelines.
The youngest of the seven children of famed farmer A.R. Stirling and his wife, Cogswell has always led an active life. She recalled attending Acadia University for a year and playing three varsity sports.
When she was old enough, Cogswell headed for nurse’s training. After she married Clinton Cogswell of Watuka Farm on Belcher Street, she became a busy farm wife, raising five children and volunteering in the community.
Each year, she arranges for family members and pets to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival children’s parade.
Not only is Cogswell happy skating, she swims most days at the Acadia pool for an hour. One of the so-called ‘early birds,’ she turns out for a 7:30 a.m. dip.
