Sheffield Mills veterans’ memorial dedication a culmination of community effort

It was the culmination of a great community effort as the Sheffield Mills Veterans’ Memorial was dedicated Sunday outside the community centre. The memorial is located under the maple tree planted in memory of Glenn Stephen Ells, who was killed in Courcelette, France, in 1916. The tree was planted in 1917. The names of men and women from the Sheffield Mills area who served in the various armed forces during the First World War, Second World War and Korea are inscribed on two granite millstones, exact replicas of two original millstones from Sheffield Mills. The millstones are mounted on a stone wall made of Sheffield Mills fieldstones. Both flagpoles were donated. The one at the front of the hall was donated by Brian Leonard of Ottawa and was transported to Sheffield Mills by Stephen Ells. Ken Roscoe of Roscoe Construction, whose father, George Roscoe from Sheffield Mills, served during the Second World War, donated the one by the memorial.
