The bookmobile returns to the Canning Lions Hall August 24, 2:15 p.m. to 3 p.m.           

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts’ country supper in the lamella and family-friendly barn dance is August 27 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. A caller will be on hand to keep everyone’s toes tapping. Dinner includes barbecued chicken or portobello burgers, potato salad and corn and a delicious blueberry dessert; along with old-fashioned lemonade, cider and coffee or tea. BBQ begins at 6 p.m. with the dance from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dinner and dance is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, $10 for children 12 and under, children under five are free ($40 family rate). The fifth Theatre off the Grid production by Two Planks and a Passion Theatre reached box office targets, with viewers coming from as far as Germany, B.C. and the U.S. The Crucible was as critically acclaimed and received a greater audience reaction than previous productions.           

The Canning Library wraps up summer hours August 28, so stop in and say “hi”, or stay and chat over a cup of tea Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. before the student employees in the library and museum return to their studies. The book club started up again recently, and the monthly tea and snacks will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. August 29. Also, if you have unwanted books, 2006 or newer, consider donating them to the library.           

Community coffee break with community policing officer, Cst. MacMurtery and senior safety coordinator, Michelle Parker will be held at the Lions’ hall August 24 from 10 a.m. to noon. Chat over coffee and treats on issues facing the community, such as home security, frauds and scams, senior safety, bicycle safety, internet security and identification kits for kids. All are welcome.           

Blomidon Provincial Park: stargazing with Larry Bogan from the Blomidon Naturalist Society and Minas Astronomy Group August 27 from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dress warmly and bring along a chair and binoculars if you have them. It’s fun for all ages. Contact Kari at 584-2331 or brownkmm@gov.ns.ca. Call the park at 582-7319 if weather is questionable.           

Celebrate 250 years with the Village of Canning Commission for a picnic at Bruce Spicer Park August 28 (rain date August 29) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  There will be a free barbecue, entertainment, heritage events and more.  Everyone welcome. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Contact the village office at 582-3768 for details.

Kingsport Tailgate Farm Market: Thursdays, 5  to 8 p.m. Vehicle space is just $10 per week for the first two weeks, $5 thereafter to defray costs incurred. Contact Donna at 582-1775 to book a space.

A fish chowder supper will be held at the Hall’s Harbour Fire Hall September 4, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Takeouts available with proceeds to the fire department.

There will also be a hymn sing at the Hall’s Harbour Baptist Church September 5 at 7 p.m. featuring Cornerstone, Charlene and Brent Reid. A light lunch will be served.           

Canning Legion karaoke will be held every third Friday of the month with the next event September 10 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Freewill offering.
