Cornwallis Project Club 4-H members were among the seven 4-H clubs and over 300 4-H members, families, leaders and volunteers in attendance for the 2010 Kings County Joint Achievement Days held in Berwick Aug. 5 and 6. Cornwallis members participated in a variety of projects and competitions, and the club finished second in classes won with 19, only one behind the leader. “All of our members represented themselves and our club very well,” says general leader George Forsyth. Cornwallis Project 4-H Club champions: Leah Salsman - Jr. Cake Decorating article and Decorating Competition, Jill MacDonald - Sr. Cake Decorating article and Decorating Competition, Emma Rand - Jr. Floriculture article, Brittany Bennett - Sr. Craft article, Laura Kennie - Sr. Junior Leader project, Aimee Cormier - Sr. Photography article and Sr. Scrapbooking article, Laura Kennie - Sr. REAL Skills article, Kathleen Newcombe - Jr. Scrapbooking article, Jr. Rabbit and Sheep Showman; Michelle Trenholm – Sr. Scrapbooking Competition, Mark Trenholm - Sr. Woodworking article, Stuart Kennie - Jr. Dairy Showman, Emma Forsyth and Allison Kennie - Sr. Dairy Clipping Competition, Gillian Tetlow Sr. Sheep Showman and Sr. Sheep Clipping Competition (with Brittany Brydon of Western Kings 4-H). All of these members will attend Pro Show. There will be other members who will attend Pro Show with articles that won in individual classes, but that information has not yet been confirmed and will be in a later column. As well, as yet unannounced Kings County members will be presented major awards recognizing their contributions to 4-H and scholarships for members who will be attending post secondary study in the future. Prescott House Museum is once again holding workshops for children age five and up all summer. Join the Prescott Picassos Tuesdays and explore all kinds of art. August 26 (raindate Aug. 27) from 10 a.m. to noon, kids can be Prescott Puppeteers, making their own puppets and putting on a puppet show. Please call the museum at 542-3984 for information. Pre-registration is required, as the workshops fill up quickly. The cost is $6 per workshop with materials and a snack provided.
The Prescott House Museum exhibits of apples and quilts and their rug-hooking workshop definitely make you think of fall. People have always enjoyed the warmth and beauty of quilts, but these works of locally made art also provide clues about the past and family heritage. Come and view quilts displayed throughout the museum from Sept. 4 to Oct. 15.
Charles Prescott was well known for his contribution to the apple industry of Nova Scotia: he introduced over 100 apple varieties to Nova Scotia. A display of some of the many apple varieties found in the Valley is on from Sept. 18 to Oct. 15.
There is an introduction to rug hooking workshop with Margaret Forsey, BFA Sept. 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Learn the folk art tradition of rug hooking, re-using old clothing and coffee bags to create an eco-friendly work of art! Materials provided. Fee $45. Enroll early, as space is limited.

The Annapolis Valley Regional Library is offering a great new service: the lending of downloadable audiobooks and e-books. They can be downloaded on computers (Macs and PCs), iPods and mp3 players. A free information session will take place at our library Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m.
