Karaoke

Girl Guide registration

September 10 and 11 Berwick Girl Guides are going, growing and looking for new gals of all ages, as Nova Scotia heads into 2011, its 100th anniversary. Registration in Berwick is at the town hall Friday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon, for Sparks (ages 5-6), Brownies (ages 7-8), Guides (ages 9-12), Pathfinders (ages 12-15), Rangers (ages 15-18). New leaders are welcome, and we also look for guest crafters, birders, archers, musicians, etc who would be interested in helping girls complete program areas. Yard sale

September 11 St. Joseph's World Youth Day Pilgrims, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine.  St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Kentville

All proceeds go to raise funds to send a group to World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid. If you'd like to set up a table, come to the church for 7:30 a.m. No rental fee, all we ask is a donation to the fundraiser. Leanne, 680-8598.

September 11 West Brooklyn Church, 11 a.m. Show & shine, merchandise bingo (bring daubers), games and more. BBQ and corn, community members free, outside of community $10/family.

Ticket auction

September 11 Waterville and District fire hall, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All new items. All funds to families and elderly in need at Christmas. 50/50 draw. Donate a non-perishable food item to our Christmas hamper and receive a free door prize ticket.

Open house

September 11 The 507 Flight Lieutenant MacLean Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Camp Aldershot in Kentville. The public and all interested youth between the ages of 12 to 18 are invited to learn all about our exciting program, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m: citizenship, marksmanship, biathlon, survival skills, drill competition, sports and flying. The benefits for our communities’ youth are boundless, the fun never ends, and there are lots of new friends to be made!

Teddy bear clinic

September 11 in Berwick, Centennial Park gazebo, noon to 4 p.m. Kids: bring your bears for a full emergency room check-up, from X-rays to casts, offered by AVH staff and community health supporters. Free, lots of fun and treats.

Corn boil and barbecue

September 11 Scott's Bay Community Hall Association, 5 p.m. at the community hall. Cost is $1/cob or three cobs for $2, hot dogs $1.50, hamburgers $3, and pop $1. Bring your favourite dessert to share at the potluck dessert following the barbecue.

Centreville day

September 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Community yard sale in the morning, various games in the afternoon. Fun activities for all ages.  Music provided by local talent; bring a chair!  There will be a canteen offering food and drinks at $1 a piece.  Come back at dark to see fireworks and enjoy a free piece of cake.

Valley Gardeners Club

September 13 Annual corn boil at 5:30 p.m. at the picnic grounds of the Kentville Agricultural Research Centre for members and guests. Bring a dessert, relish or salad to share. The regular meeting follows at 7:30 p.m. at a new location, room 2101 Kingstec campus of NSCC on Belcher Street. Speakers Sarah MacDonald and Tracey Tomlik of Harvest Landscape Design will talk about "Edibles in the Landscape". A house plant / perennial exchange will follow.

Free workshop

Annapolis Valley Giant Vegetable Growers Club

Your Way to Wellness

Do you have a chronic health condition? Every Monday night, the King's Community Concert band rehearses, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., in the hall of St. Paul, St. Stephen Church, Main St., Kentville.  The band does both parades and concert performances, is looking to expand and is inviting interested musicians to check us out.

Moms & Tots

Support groups

Seniors’ groups

Wednesdays Coldbrook and District Apple Valley Seniors meet Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a potluck every third Wednesday of the month. Games and a light lunch at the Seniors’ room of the Lions Hall on South Bishop Rd, Coldbrook.

Wednesdays  Centreville 50 plus association: 1:30 p.m. at the community hall. Bring a friend.

Wednesdays Minas Fifty Plus Seniors Club. New Minas Fire Hall, 1 p.m. Fun, games and light lunch. Monthly potluck first week at noon. New members welcome. Nora, 768-6848, Anita, 678-6741.

Wednesdays and Thursdays New Horizons Seniors Club, 350 Main Street, Kentville.  Club opens at noon for recreational activities such as cards, carpet bowling, WII, crokinole, and many others. Members and friends welcome.

Volunteers needed

The VON Annapolis Valley District volunteers  assist with the community support programs helping seniors, the adult day program, meals on wheels, foot clinics and the safety check-in programs. Call 1-800-411-9646 or 678-1733.

Girl Guides leaders wanted: If you are a female, over the age of 18 who loves to have fun, Guiding is the place to be!  Aylesford units are looking for women who love crafts, adventures, being with girls of all ages, singing, playing games and camping. Cub and Scout leaders wanted: 1st Wolfville Scout Group has openings for Cub and Scout Leaders to volunteer with an already established team of experienced leaders.  Cubs and Scouts meet on Monday and Tuesday nights, respectively, in Wolfville from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Cubs range in age from eight to10 years of age and Scouts are 11to14.  Contact Suzie Blatt (suzie_blatt@hotmail.com  or 542-2947) for info.
