A chemical spill sent Horton High students home early on their first day back to school.
Sometime this morning, “fluids being transported to the science lab were spilled by the office,” said Karen Sotvedt, communications secretary with Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.
More than a 1,000 high school students plus children from the onsite daycare were evacuated Thursday, Sept. 3. Bus students were moved to the Old Orchard Inn for dismissal and students with cars were dismissed from the school parking lot.
“There was no immediate threat to the student population,” Sotvedt added. However, the school will remain closed today for clean-up. AVRSB superintendant Margo Tait was onsite Thursday morning with Horton administration.
While waiting in the Old O parking lot, student Nick Alkenbrack said the fire alarm rang after a delivery of hydrochloric acid was spilled in the school’s administration area. Alkenbrack’s mother was onsite to pick him up after receiving a call at work about the evacuation.
