AVH changes vaccination priorities, opens assessment clinic

Annapolis Valley Health (AVH) announced changes to its vaccination strategy today.

First Nations , Valley Regional Hospital , Wolfville

From Nov. 2 to 5, AVH H1N1 vaccine clinics will target specific high-risk groups. ONLY pregnant women, children six months to five years of age, health care workers (with valid ID) and members of First Nations communities will receive immunization. All clinics run from 1 to 8 p.m. and shots are free. Please bring your health card and do not attend if experiencing flu-like symptoms.

For those concerned about flu-like symptoms, the health authority opened a flu assessment clinic at Eastern Kings Memorial Community Health Centre (EKM) today.

The clinic is open from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. daily until further notice. This clinic will serve individuals experiencing mild to moderate flu-like symptoms who feel they need to see a health care professional. This is not a flu vaccination clinic.

The move is in response to an increased volume of patients with flu-like symptoms presenting at doctors’ offices and clinics. In order to open this clinic, the Wolfville centre will temporary suspend non-urgent walk in clinic hours to allow for flu assessment. No other services at the EKM will be affected at this time.

Valley Regional Hospital’s emergency department and Western Kings Memorial Health Centre’s outpatient clinic will be redirecting patients with mild to moderate flu like symptoms to the flu assessment clinic at EKM.

For inquiries regarding H1N1, call 811. For emergency care, dial 911 or visit the Valley Regional Hospital emergency department.

AVH wants to thank the community in advance for their patience and understanding during this time.
