Swimmers are welcome again at Aylesford Lake beach as of Wednesday, July 29.
Due to high levels of bacteria, including E. coli., the municipal beach closed to all water activities July 23.
Speaking on behalf of the County of Kings, Acting Chief Administrative Officer Bill McKennan said closures were recommended for health and safety reasons based on advice from the provincial departments of environment and health.
After several days of close monitoring, the beach reopened once “bacteria counts were well within the allowable limits.
“We do water testing daily, to monitor bacteria count in the water,” McKennan added. “Hopefully, (the high bacteria count) was just because of the increase in temperature and the amount of rain that happened this week.”
Testing will continue at the beach on a daily basis.
McKennan said the source of the bacteria has not been identified, but may be due to “drainage and run-off issues.” He said the only other time a high bacteria count closed the beach was in 1990.
Information on the closure was posted on the County’s website and the cottage owner’s association was informed, McKennan noted.
He emphasized the closure “shows the validity and usefulness of the testing we do for individuals using the beaches.”
