More than 100 unregistered firearms were found at the scene of a house fire on the Lockhartville Road in Hants Border May 6.
The Hantsport Fire Department responded to the scene of a house fire around 1 p.m. Finding a large amount of guns in one burned barn, firefighters called Kings District RCMP to the scene. Military munitions were also found.
According to RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Brigdit Leger, “the firearms and ammunition appear to be vintage WWI or WWII weapons.”
An abandoned house, an adjacent barn and several outbuildings were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The Department of Natural Resources was called in when flames spread to nearby brush, and departments from Aylesford to Summerville called to assist.
Hantsport Deputy Chief Peter Johnston says high winds and a lack of water impeded efforts to contain the fire. Firefighters were able to save a nearby home, also belonging to the owner of the property.
The bomb disposal unit from 14 Wing Greenwood was called in to safely detonate the munitions May 7.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Both the blaze and the collection of weapons are under investigation.
