Firefighters and equipment from five Valley departments responded to a barn fire Wednesday afternoon on Brooklyn Street, near Aylesford.

Aylesford and District firefighters responded to the alarm shortly after 3 p.m. and on their arrival, found a working structure fire with heavy smoke coming from the approximately 70 by 35 foot building.

Mutual aid was requested and supplied from Berwick, Kingston, Waterville and District and Kentville. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to the adjacent house.

Speaking at around 6 p.m., Aylesford fire chief Shawn Carey confirmed the structure was "about three-quarters full" of hay, and also contained several tractors and a hay baler.

Firefighters were able to remove one of the tractors, but the other tractors and the baler remained inside.

After 5 p.m., an excavator was brought in to create a hole on the north side of the barn so some of the burning and smouldering hay could be removed.

As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, Chief Carey was unsure of what might have started the fire.
