Kings County breaking news
By John DeCoste
A fire the evening of Jan. 17 caused damage to a New Minas business.
New Minas firefighters responded at 5:49 p.m. to a report of flames going through the roof at 8943 Commercial Street, directly across from the Empire Theatres.
On their arrival, according to fire chief James Redmond, they found “fire coming out the doors and windows.”
The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before it resulted in “considerable damage” to the lower level, which housed an esthetics salon, and “a small amount of smoke damage” to an apartment on the second floor.
Kentville firefighters were dispatched to stand in at the New Minas station, and also assisted with traffic control on Commercial Street.
The cause of the fire was under investigation by the fire department, Kings District RCMP and staff from the provincial fire marshal’s office.
“We don’t feel it’s suspicious,” Redmond said Jan. 18, “but to be extra cautious, given the number of fires we’ve had in that general area, we’re investigating it to be sure.”
