An arbitrator’s decision on Kentville’s unionized police officers’ next contract is pending.
The town, Police Association of Nova Scotia and a provincially appointed arbitrator met Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
“Both parties met for the hearing and with any process there was some opportunity for some mediation,” town chief administrative officer Mark Phillips.
He confirmed Feb. 2 the sides failed to reach an agreement and the contract proposals of both parties are now with arbitrator Bruce Outhouse.
“It is presently in the hands of the arbitrator as of (Feb. 1),” Phillips said. “We hope to have a decision within weeks.”
In October, Phillips said the town had issues around remuneration and language issues. At the time, PANS’ spokesman David Fisher said the union had concerns about salary and pensions.
Seventeen unionized officers in Kentville have been without a contract since March 31, 2008. The town's police service also has a chief, deputy chief and several non-unionized civilian employees.
A spokesperson from PANS could not be reached for comment before press time.
