Running Kings County’s top-heavy government impedes decision making and prevents full employee involvement, responsibility and accountability; its management is cumbersome and bureaucratic, there is a lack of teamwork and poor customer service.

An organizational, governance and administrative review of the Municipality of the County of Kings has been unanimously accepted by council.

A county news release April 12 says staff will be streamlined into a “true management team.” All affected staff members have been offered severance.

Several redundant council committees will also be abolished. Affected committees “only serve to slow down the decision-making process and create unnecessary bureaucracy.”

Council will have to work with the new management team to “ensure more effective cooperation and collaboration.”

The municipality will hold a news conference April 13 to release details.

The county wants ongoing input into the services customers want and how the municipality provides them.

Warden Fred Whalen said this is not a downsizing, but a well-researched restructuring that addresses many of the issues the private sector has had to deal with. He said taxpayers are not willing to continually pay more taxes and not receive the level of service they require.
