The Kingston village commission has a special meeting June 22 to determine how to proceed with filling one vacancy on the commission.
At the village’s June 8 annual meeting, an almost unanimously supported motion from the floor set aside the commission’s plan to acclaim candidate Cory Lingard to the position.
Incumbent Doug Beaman withdrew his candidacy and resigned from the commission just days before the end of his term in reaction to changes in the voting procedure.
Clerk treasurer Greg Towne says the meeting will begin with an in-camera session with the village’s legal counsel.
“I want the commissioners to have opinions from all angles,” says Towne. The in-camera session was to be followed by a meeting open to the public. Towne is anticipating a decision would be made that evening.
“I will be pushing commissioners for a decision,” that will settle the controversy, which developed when an unadvertised advance poll was added to the voting procedure. Towne adds direction from Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations will also be reviewed.
