Greens to pick new provincial leader

The Advertiser

The Nova Scotia Green Party will select a new leader at its leadership convention in Coldbrook this weekend.

The event will take place May 4-6 and will feature presentations by Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May and Kings-Hants Green candidate Janet Eaton.

The leadership candidates include: Ellen Durkee, Middle Stewiacke; Ken McGowan, Cow Bay; and Aaron Eisses, Masstown.

The convention will open Friday evening with a report by party president Elizabeth Perry, followed by a tribute to outgoing party leader Nick Wright.

There will be a showing of the documentary film Rudy Haase at the Al Whittle Theatre, Wolfville, afterwards.

Saturday’s agenda includes constitution and bylaw sessions, a policy session, officers’ reports, election of officers, keynote speeches by May and Eaton, with candidates’ addresses capping the evening.

Sunday’s schedule includes a morning social, constitution, bylaw and policy wrap-ups, candidate question and answer session, leadership voting, and speech by the new leader.

Convention co-chair Chris Alders said Friday, April 27 that “Greens will be coming from all parts of the province and there will be a fair number of them.” He couldn’t hazard a guess at any accurate estimate of participation, but noted that the interest is great this year, in part because of the guest speakers.
