Kings County council is considering bidding on two wharf properties in Port Williams in a tax sale this spring to transfer the properties to the village.

The village’s waterfront development committee feels the wharf would be a good addition to the village and offer great potential for re-developing the waterfront.

The county has had no luck trying to sell the wharf properties at tax sales in the past. If no bids are received at the next tax sale in March, the municipality can bid an amount to cover the outstanding taxes and fees, a combined $20,236.72.

Financial Services manager Kim Durling said there would be no additional insurance cost to the municipality to take on ownership of the properties for a few months until the titles could be transferred to the village.

If council supports the recommendation to bid on and purchase the properties to transfer ownership to the village, a later motion could be made to include the outstanding county taxes as part of the transfer.

There is about $1,500 in outstanding village taxes on the two properties, which Durling said the village would have to write off.
