The start of the high school football season in Nova Scotia was pushed back at least a few days, first by last week’s heat wave and then by forecast high winds and heavy rain associated with Hurricane Earl.
Horton and NKEC were supposed to open their NSSAFFL seasons Sept. 2 at Acadia, but that game was postponed when humidex readings reached the low 40s Celsius in the afternoon. Practices for both teams Sept. 1 was cancelled due to the extreme heat and humidity.
With conditions no better and Hurricane Earl looming, the Central Kings home opener, scheduled for Sept. 3 at Acadia, met the same fate, the decision to postpone was made by 10 a.m.
Discussions are underway to possibly play both games Sept. 6, but nothing finalized by press time.
As well, all the Soccer Nova Scotia provincial tournaments scheduled for throughout the province last weekend were postponed by the weather, including the U-16 Tier 2 girls’ provincial tournament set for New Minas.
