Tigers top Axewomen 65-52

The Acadia basketball Axemen continue to roll in the Atlantic Universities Basketball Conference.

The Axemen improved to 15-4 on the season with a decisive 99-55 win over the Dalhousie Tigers Thursday evening, Feb.20 in Wolfville.

On a night the Axemen recognized graduating seniors Lauchlan Gale, Anthony Ashe, Anthony Sears and Owen Klassen, Acadia led the entire game, winning the second quarter 23-11 and the third 35-15 to put the game away.

Ashe, who played just five minutes of the first half and did not score after landing in early foul trouble, came out smoking after the intermission, draining seven consecutive threes and finishing with a team-high 23 points.

Gianmarco Luciani added 18 points, including four threes, and Shaquille Smith (14 points, 11 rebounds), Kyle Arseneault (14 points) and Klassen (12 points, nine boards) also scored in double figures.

John Traboulsi, with 13 points, was the only Tiger in double figures.

Acadia shot a blistering 57.1 per cent from the floor, made 15 of 25 three-pointers and won the rebounding 50-30.

In the women’s game, Dal scored a 65-52 victory over the Axewomen after Acadia recognized graduating seniors Abbey Duinker, Chika Chiekwe, Rita Sibo and Kristy Moore for their accomplishments over the past three to five years.

The Acadia women fell to 5-14 on the season – much of their struggles being due to losing Moore, Sibo and Chiekwe to season-ending knee injuries before Christmas.

Courtney Thompson led all scorers with 20 points for the Tigers, and added eight rebounds. Tessa Stammberger chipped in 13 points (and 10 rebounds), and Robbi Daley and Rebecca Nuttall had 10 points apiece.

Duinker finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the final home game of her Acadia career. Allie Berry added 10 points and seven boards, Maya Macatumpag finished with nine points and Maire Burke had eight points and eight rebounds.

The Acadia teams finish the regular season with a pair of games Saturday evening, Feb.22 against the same Tigers in Halifax. The women’s game is set for 6 p.m., with the men’s game following at 8.
