Owen Klassen hit a free throw with two seconds remaining to lead Acadia Axemen to a 76-75 victory over Saint Mary’s Feb. 1 in university basketball action.
The win improved Acadia to 8-4 and in sole possession of second place, two points back of UPEI.
Acadia led 38-30 at the half but the host team won the third by eight to tie the game going to the fourth quarter.
Anthony Sears led the Axemen with 22 points while Sean Stoqua and Klassen each had 16. Anthony Ashe and Jonathan Tull each chipped in 10 for the winners. Klassen led the Axemen on the glass with 13 rebounds.
Acadia is back in action Wednesday when they host Saint Mary’s (6-8) at 8 p.m. The season series is now tied 1-1.
The women also returned home victorious with a 83-78 win, extending their winning streak to 11 games.
Emma Duinker and Abbey Duinker led the way with 24 and 22 points, respectively. Kristy Moore added 19 and Stefanie Chapman 12.

The Axewomen host the Huskies Wednesday at 6 p.m. Acadia has won both games this season.
