All-Canadian Acadia receiver Mike Squires has signed a two-year contract with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.

Squires, a Halifax native who played high school football at Halifax West, will attend the Stampeders’ training camp in late May 2012 following his graduation from Acadia with a business degree.

Squires had a breakout 2011 season for the Axemen, which included four touchdowns in one game against the Saint Mary’s Huskies. He led the conference with seven touchdowns while hauling in 31 catches for 432 yards.

He was selected an AUS all-star at inside receiver, then became the first Acadia receiver since Ivan Birungi to be named a first-team all-Canadian.

The 6’4” Squires first attracted CFL interest following an open tryout for Atlantic university players last April at Saint Mary’s. After testing well, he garnered interest from both Calgary and Hamilton.

Squires signed a contract for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, with an option for 2014.
