The Acadia Axemen’s hockey season is over.

Matt Carter scored the game-winning goal at 11:41 of double overtime Monday to send the host UPEI Panthers to a 6-5 win and a 2-1 quarter-final series victory.

The Panthers will play top-ranked UNB in one semifinal while Saint Mary’s plays Moncton in the other.

Acadia’s Adam McIllwraith opened the scoring Monday 1:50 into the first period, but the Panthers stormed back with four straight goals. Acadia’s Spencer Jezegou scored on the power play late in the first to make the score 4-2.

Acadia received second period goals from Liam Heelis, Jonathan Laberge and Joel Ridgeway to take a 5-4 lead heading to the third period. Acadia outshot UPEI 17-4 in the middle stanza.

Carter scored less than two minutes into the final frame to tie the score and force overtime. He had five goals in the three-game series.

Heelis had a pair of assists for the Axemen while singles went to Cullen Morin, K.C. Brown, Christopher Owens, Alex Beaton, Joe Gaynor and Andrew Clark.

Peter DiSalvo made 27 saves and was tagged with the loss. He replaced Evan Mosher 15 minutes into the game with the Axemen trailing 4-1.
