Valley Wild win the gold at Midget AA tournament

The host team brought home the gold March 24 at the Female Midget AA provincials.

Valley Wild – which is made up of girls from Kings, Hants and Annapolis counties – defeated the Antigonish Bulldogs 3-1 in the final game.

It was a much closer tournament than the final game sheet might indicate, said Coach Ken Sewards.

“Anybody could have won, it came down to a battle in the end,” he said as his team celebrated on the ice at the Kentville Centennial Arena. “We played today like we should’ve played (March 23). It was a total team effort, we had a strong team all year with a lot of ups and downs, and they dug down today.”

The tournament was a close match, with third place a three-way tie between Halifax, Tasa-Chebucto and Pictou. Halifax, however, came out on top due to the points breakdown.

“It was a tight tournament, five games went into overtime,” added Sewards.

The Valley Wild led in the final 3-0 until midway through the third, when Antigonish came back to score the lone marker against goalie Morgan Benjamin.

The local team hung on, however, despite some chippy play from the Bulldogs that required one player to be helped off the ice.

“They’re tough, we expect this kind of things sometimes, you get frustrated,” Sewards said.

Taylor Peters scored the first goal of the day for Valley, while Hillary Dort picked up two markers.
