Less than two weeks after sweeping Cape Breton at home, the Acadia basketball teams did the same to UNB Saturday, this time on the road.
The Axewomen started the evening by holding on for a 71-63 win over the Varsity Reds. The Axemen competed the sweep with a 95-60 victory.
In the women’s game, Acadia scored the game’s first 10 points, but led by just 22-18 after one quarter and 38-31 at halftime.
The Axewomen took control with a 20-9 third quarter, then held off a late UNB surge (the V-Reds won the fourth quarter 23-13) to clinch the win.
Kristy Moore had a huge game for Acadia with 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Stefanie Chapman added 15 points and seven rebounds, Abbey Duinker 11 points and Emma Duinker 10.
Jordanne Holstein had 17 points (including five threes) for UNB.
The win extended Acadia’s regular season winning streak to seven games and improved the Axewomen record to 7-1.
Acadia, with a 3-0 record since Christmas, was alone in second place at the start of the week with 22 points, four behind Saint Mary’s.
In the men’s game, Acadia led 9-2 early, but UNB came back to take a 15-13 advantage after one quarter. The Axemen won the second quarter 22-18 for a 35-33 halftime lead.
Acadia then kicked its offense into overdrive in the second half, winning the third quarter 24-6 and the fourth 36-21 for 60 second-half points.
Owen Klassen, in foul trouble for much of the game, finished with 17 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes.
Jonathan Tull also had 17 points while Anthony Sears added 14 and Bradley States had a strong game with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Both Acadia teams travel to St. John’s this weekend for a pair of games each with the Memorial SeaHawks. Games are scheduled for 6 and 8 p.m. (NST) Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.
