The Horton D-1 girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 3-0 start to their season by going undefeated at their annual Tip-Off tournament Nov. 9-10.

The Griffins scored fairly easy wins over Park View (72-32), Cole Harbour (66-36) and Yarmouth (69-37) en route to the tournament win.

And with Cole Harbour defeating Yarmouth 62-49, Yarmouth topping Park View 64-44 and Cole Harbour handling Park View 80-51, it gives Horton at least some idea of the level of competition it might face this season, at least at the regional level.

In their opener, Horton led 17-12 after one quarter, then won the second quarter 21-2 and the third 22-9, before letting the non-starters finish the game.

The Horton scoring was spread around, with Lauren Jodrey and Candace Smith finishing with 12 points each, Graysen Parker 11, Jennika Veinot nine and Scarlett Smith seven.

In their second game, the Griffins got 25 points from Jodrey and 17 from Veinot for the win over Cole Harbour, despite losing Candace Smith due to an injury after having scored just two points.

Horton led 24-17 at halftime, but put the game away with a 25-11 third quarter and a 17-8 fourth.

In their third game against Yarmouth, the Griffins led 16-6 after one quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 48-31 after three quarters, then cemented the decision with a 21-6 edge in the fourth quarter.

Jodrey finished with 22 and Smith 18 for Horton, while Allie Berry had 16 and Sam McDougall 10 for Yarmouth.
