The tournament may have gotten a lot more competitive over the years, but the bottom line is the same: it’s still about having fun.
Fairlanes in New Minas hosted the 42nd annual Peter Wells Bowling Tournament Feb. 6 to Feb. 8.
Long-time tournament organizer Frank Russell said he has been working at Fairlanes for nearly 40 years, and this is the 39th time he has been involved. He still enjoys organizing the tournament and working with all the others involved.
Although it is a highly competitive environment, with all 20 teams taking part this year vying for the $1,800 top prize, the event is still about the enjoyment of bowling.
“It’s getting more competitive today,” Russell said. “The teams are getting stronger.”
Included in the 20-team line-up were five local teams representing the house, among them the Paddy’s Pub team, the defending champions. There are also teams that travel from all corners of the province.
Russell said the tournament’s namesake, Peter Wells, was the original owner of Fairlanes, at the time known as Valley Lanes. Wells was an avid supporter of bowling - and a fine bowler himself.
In terms of successfully pulling off the tournament every year, it has become old hat for Russell. He said he sends out letters inviting teams and awaits their replies.
“Once everyone’s here, it pretty well runs itself,” he said.
