“It’s a thrill of a lifetime, no doubt about it,” said Shirley Wile of East Noel, formerly of Kentville.
Wile was one of the torchbearers in Kentville Nov. 20.
What is perhaps more remarkable: Wile is got to share it with her daughter, Elizabeth Wile, a torchbearer in Enfield two days earlier. Although she didn’t do it as an official part of the relay because of concerns over passing the flame, Elizabeth had the distinction of being the first person to unicycle with the torch.
“She was so thrilled,” Shirley said of her daughter. “She gave me pointers about things she missed that she didn’t want me to.”
Shirley said she watched her first Olympics when she was 16 and was inspired by the spectacle, seeing Canada participate alongside all the other nations and the sense of peace and goodwill surrounding it.
When asked what she did to prepare for the relay, Shirley said, “Smile a lot!”
Shirley said she was so happy she was vibrating, and both she and Elizabeth are extremely excited about the entire experience. Shirley found out in June she made it through the first round of the selection process, and Elizabeth found out a month later. They each wrote an essay to be considered during the second round, and both were thrilled when they were informed organizers needed to know their sizes: they’d been chosen!
