When the three women met recently to discuss the projects they are working on, Huntley had a novel idea.

“Paula mentioned about a cash mob in Halifax and we all thought 'Hey, wouldn't that be cool?'” says Churchill Duke

But what is a cash mob?

According to the Cash Mob website (cash-mobs.com), Cash Mobs are like flash mobs, but instead of singing and dancing, participants spend money as a group. They target small, local businesses that make each community special in order to give the business owners a boost in business. They help businesses grow, make people happy, do a little shopping and have a great time.

“We wanted to find a way to really support local businesses,” explains Churchill Duke.  “We wanted to put money into the business, say thank you to the business owner, and do something fun.”

Kentville's first cash mob will take place on Nov. 19 between 11 a.m. and noon at TAN Coffee on Main Street. Participants are encouraged to gather and spend $10.

Churchill Duke says the experiment was planned during the week so that people could pop out of work for lunch and drop in for a quick shop.

“The community support has been awesome,” says Churchill Duke.

The group plans to hold a cash mob at a different location every few months.  The location of the next gathering is kept a secret until just shortly before the set date.

“To build up the excitement,” explains Churchill Duke.

Anyone can participate in the cash mob - no talent for singing and dancing required.  Likewise, anyone who is interested in staging their own cash mob can do so.

“We just suggest that they get in touch with us first, to get the conversation started.  We already have the infrastructure in place, and would be happy to help,” says Churchill Duke.
