South Shore entrepreneur and Mashup chief executive officer Andrew Button is inviting participants to spend 54 hours at what he calls “breakneck business building.”

There will be simultaneous Mashup Weekends happening at locations in Bridgewater and Yarmouth and Button says it’s not too late to register.

In teams, along with the help of a facilitator, participants will work together to make the best business dreams a reality. The event will culminate with the presentation of the new business to a panel of entrepreneurs for expert advice.

“If it sounds intense, that’s because it is,” he says. “But it’s also a lot of fun. Where else will you find the time, resources, space and most important - amazing people – to learn about entrepreneurship and maybe even start a business? This is life-changing stuff!”

Button said you don’t need business experience to take part. “All you need is energy and a willingness to share your talents.”

The series of events and mentorship programs to activate and amplify startup communities in rural Atlantic Canada is designed to identify entrepreneurial talent and help bring business ideas to life.

Button adds the weekend isn’t just for business people. The sessions he terms “audacious” will result in storytelling as participants capture their experience.

“All of us see opportunities to improve something, to make something better, how to do something easier,” he said. “Mashup Weekend is about creating a space where people – anybody, really – can take action.”

Organizers for the event have reached out to experienced entrepreneurs throughout the region, as well as other parts of the province, to participate as mentors and coaches for the weekend.

Button says the weekend offers the experience of collaborating with other like-minded people, getting better connected and taking action – “actually doing something,” he says – to get an idea off the ground.

The first Mashup on the South Shore attracted people from the Valley and the greater Yarmouth area, so he said partnering with NSCC and holding a weekend round is working out well.

He plans to be at all three locations during the weekend and he’s looking forward to the collision of ideas when people from different backgrounds and experience come together.

The local facilitator, Mike Caplan, has been active as a web application developer and web designer for 16 years, working in the non-profit, university, retail, agricultural and dental industries. Caplan is the software development manager at Labnet Dental Lab System, a division of the American Fortune 500 company Henry Schein. The Wolfville resident is a founding partner of HarvestHand, a platform that services Community Shared Agriculture farms.

Caplan also founded Refresh Annapolis Valley, a new media professional association to help grow the Valley's technology industry.

Thanks to sponsorship, registration is $60 and includes all meals and snacks.
