Fox Mountain last stop re-opens

What Kerrigan Weihers simply calls “the garage” is actually a revitalized landmark in Morristown.

Weihers and wife Debbie have taken a lease on the old Howard Beals and then Glendon Harris garage on the Aylesford Road, across from the Morristown Community Hall. Open since July 15, Weihers says he’s been “really busy.

“We doubled our business in one week, and a lot of people from the community are coming in, people staying at the lakes - they say it’s great and they’ll do what they can to keep us running.”

The garage offers full service gas and diesel at competitive prices and a mechanic (Kendall Reese) on duty, convenience groceries and snack foods, and lots of essentials for cottagers over the mountain, from fireworks and mixing oil for boats to Tylenol and toilet paper.

It’s been 11 years since Morristown had its own gas  stop and, if you can get past Weiher’s support of race car driver Jimmie Johnson in his shop’s decor, he’d be happy to have you drop in for a cup of coffee.

“We want it to be like an old store, with people from the community sitting around talking.”

Weihers says his son and staff will continue to run his excavating business.

Computer fix-it

A friendly, family business-  the new Schaffner Computers - is located between Raymond James and Kings Centre Plaza Blockbuster strip mall on Commercial Street. The New Minas computer shop offers computers solutions, big and small.

“When you go into bigger stores, what you see is what you get,” Rod Schaffner says. “When you come in here, we can sit down and figure out what you need: a simple machine for the internet, or something for gaming.”

“And if we don’t have it,” Krista adds, “just ask.”

That includes custom built computers, trade-ins, upgrades, new laptops and accessories, computer repair, data backup, recovery and storage as well as instore and onsite servicing. Rod has more than 15 years’ experience as a computer technician, 10 in the New Minas area.

The 8911 Commercial Street shop is open six days a week. Find Schaffner Computers on Facebook or call (902)365-3888.

Wandlyn freshens up

A new sign at Coldbrook’s Wandlyn Inn has confused more than one passerby, admits manager Heather Ferdinand.

The hotel’s new sign – Pine View Inn - went up August 13, but the business’ name didn’t change until September 1, and not all of the signage has yet been replaced. Website and front desk staff still refer to it as the Wandlyn, making it a bit hard to find.

“We had to put our sign up early,” Ferdinand says. “It’s like sending them on a scavenger hunt.”

Wandlyn Inns is no longer a chain, she says.

“For the past few years, the Wandlyn Inns have been mostly independent and now there is only one other one, in Amherst.

“It was time to change. We’re excited about the direction that we’re going.”

Ownership of the motel hasn’t changed: 7270 Properties Inc. remains in charge. According to the Registry of Joint Stock Companies, the company’s directors are a group of British Columbia residents, and the president is  Dong Hwan Kang.

Ferdinand promises more to come for Pine View.

“This is just a name change, for now, but we have some hopes for the future.”

Vet appointment

Dr. Doug Roberts, a companion animal veterinarian from Cornwallis Veterinarians in Kentville, is the 62nd president of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).
