NEW MINAS - Ellen Grant’s beloved Reitman’s clothing store seemed like a mere semblance of what it once was when she walked through the doors June 27.

The posters that once lined the large glass windows at the front of the store on Silver Fox Ave. were gone, and several shelves inside the retail space were already empty at about 10 a.m. that morning. Grant was among a steady flow of customers to visit the women’s clothing store on closing day.

“I was actually surprised,” she said, reflecting on the day she learned Reitmans was slated for closure.

“I saw it on Facebook that it was closing. I was down here a couple of weeks ago and bought a couple tops and nobody mentioned anything.”

The Lakeville resident has been shopping at Reitmans since the original New Minas location opened in the County Fair Mall. She worries that she’ll now have to travel further from home to buy clothes similar to what she found at Reitmans.

“It’s hard to find petite sizes… so I was really disappointed that Reitmans is closing. I like the quality of the clothes and the prices are reasonable,” she said.

“I always did buy my clothes here for summer clothes and when I go away and stuff. Now I really don’t know where I’m going to shop.”

Employees working during the closing out sale were not permitted to comment.

In a press release issued May 30, Reitmans Canada Ltd. reported that it noted a 1.8 per cent increase in sales across the chain when comparing the results of the operating quarter ending April 30 compared to the same time last year. This increase, the release says, occurred despite the fact that the company noted a reduction of 81 stores.

“Store sales increased 1.2 per cent and e-commerce sales increased 55.5 per cent as the company continues to experience strong growth in its e-commerce channel,” the prepared statement reads.

Reitmans was founded in Montreal in 1926, and is now a publicly owned company with several retail banners, including Addition Elle, Penningtons, RW & Co., Thyme Maternity and Hyba Movewear.
