KENTVILLE - Shoppers heading to the cash registers in select Kentville businesses this holiday season could be in for more than they bargained for – in a good way.

Andrew Zebian, owner of the Phinneys clothing store on Webster Street, happily participates in the Shop Kentville to Win contest that draws more people to Kentville throughout the holiday season.

The Kentville Merchants Group, Town of Kentville and AVR/Magic 9.49 radio stations are sponsoring a Shop Kentville to Win contest with a prize package valued at more than $2,500.

Patrons shopping at participating businesses between Nov. 25 and Dec. 20 will have an opportunity to fill out a ballot for a chance to win the prize package assembled by the Kentville Merchants Group.

The Town of Kentville originally started the contest in 2011 as a way to entice more consumers to visit Kentville’s businesses during the holiday season.

“We do have quite a few unique stores that you can purchase gifts from,” said Lindsay Young, community development co-ordinator for the Town of Kentville.

The merchants’ group has helped the contest grow into a collaborative effort involving about 20 businesses this year, Young said.

“People love it and people look for it,” she said, noting that the participating businesses offer everything from apparel and jewelry to haircuts and quality meals.

“People get really excited, especially folks that are already shopping in Kentville, to know that they can go to their favourite store and have an opportunity to win something cool.”

Businesses supporting the Shop Kentville to Win campaign benefit from the added exposure on social media and extra foot traffic in their shops.

Andrew Zebian, owner of the Phinneys clothing store on Webster Street, likes how the contest encourages Kentville’s merchants to work together to draw more people in to see what they have to offer.

“We’re all about old-fashioned customer service here,” he said, speaking on behalf of Kentville’s merchants.

“Our main thing here is customer service and that’s why Kentville is still thriving.”

Many shops will have extended hours and open on Sundays in December, Zebian said.

“You can come to Kentville, you can eat, you can shop, you can take a show in at CentreStage Theatre… you can beat the traffic,” he said.

“Everything is here.”
