The strongest man in Gaspereau reaches 100
GASPEREAU NS – Morley Jodrey, once known as the strongest man in Gaspereau, marked his 100th birthday on April 15.
Ingrid Blais and Christina Tanner were good at explaining L'Arche Homefires needs in Wolfville, including support for core members with Alzheimer's.
WOLFVILLE NS – Two fund raising walks are set for organizations in the Wolfville area, which work with the disabled.
Support Services Group (SSG), which is a cooperative, is holding a walkathon on Tuesday, April 25 to raise funds for social, recreational and skill building activities. The province-wide co-op functions in three regions of Nova Scotia.
Participants will be gathering at Clock Park at 1 p.m.
Senior coordinator Barb Aikman says we are very excited to have Scotia Bank supporting us in this effort with matching funds.
“One of our big events, open to all regions, is the opportunity to go camping,” Aikman noted.
SSG worked with approximately 50 individuals with disabilities in the Valley region, according to Aikman, from its headquarters in New Minas.
Meanwhile several staff members at L’Arche Homefires in Wolfville will participate in the Walk For Alzheimer's on May 7, which benefits the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
At L'Arche, says director Ingrid Blais, “we have supported many people on their Alzheimer’s journey. The reality is that there is a strong link between Alzheimer’s Disease and our wonderful friends who have Down Syndrome, so we know we will be supporting others in the future.”
Blais will be walking in memory of a late core member Linda De Wolfe and in honour of two more, whom, she says, “are currently teaching us daily about living with Alzheimer’s disease.”
The 5 km walk will take place on Sunday, May 7 starting at 1 p.m. from the Wolfville Farmers Market.
Some 17,000 Nova Scotians are navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.
