Somerset-based society helping people on the streets

Kelly Grant, Emerald Cummings and Ashley Cummings will be making a difference in the lives of people on the streets through the newly formed Emerald Aisle Society.

SOMERSET - Kelly Grant and Ashley Cummings refuse to turn a blind eye to people on the streets.

The mother-daughter duo recently formed The Emerald Aisle Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to street missions.

“We have stuff in our vehicles and if we see somebody that needs socks, or water, or something we’ll just open up the trunk and help them out,” said Grant, a Somerset resident.

The society is based in Kings County, but the street missions will span the province.

“We’ve always done fundraisers but we always had to fundraise for specific people rather than fundraising and putting it towards street missions,” said Cummings, adding that they’ll be helping people wherever they see a need.

“We feel like there is a need for it and not only just in Halifax – in the Valley, or even Cape Breton.”

Cummings, now a resident of Windsor, recalls accompanying her mother on impromptu street missions growing up.

“I think our biggest eye opener would have been Harley Lawrence in Berwick,” said Cummings, noting that she used to join her mother in taking Lawrence food or items that would help him keep warm.

“We would take him meals from home, and feed him, and he really just touched us.”

They will soon be heavily focused on fundraising to gather more supplies, and will be accepting donations of such items as lip balm, bottled water, feminine hygiene products, healthy snacks, new socks and underwear, shoes that are in good condition, etc. There will be a donation box set up at the Berwick Baptist Church.

“It feels really good. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’ve got big dreams for this,” said Grant.

The duo would gladly accept more members if anyone is interested in getting involved.

“The more the merrier,” said Grant.
