KENTVILLE - Sharpen those skates.

The first annual Miners Marsh Pond Hockey Classic is slated to take place Feb. 18 as part of the Town of Kentville’s Weekend of Winter celebration.

“We can have three or four different ice surfaces going at once,” said Kevin Bennett, facilities manager for Kentville’s Parks and Recreation department.

“People are starting to skate there now.”-

The idea for the pond hockey tournament came from a brainstorming session that looked at the various ways the town could encourage more people to visit the marsh in the winter. NSCC joined on as a partner for the pond hockey classic.

“Part of the point is that not enough people have been getting excited about pond hockey, but they’re starting to bring it back a little bit,” said Bennett.

“There’s nothing more fun than playing pond hockey.”

Teams of six can register for the classic, and organizers hope to have divisions for youth, females and adults. Bennett said the upcoming tournament gives hockey players a chance to get out in the fresh air and get back to the basics.

“It’s where the game started.”

If the weather permits, Bennett said there will be snowshoeing around the marsh during the tournament and a bonfire for spectators to enjoy.

For more information about how to register a team for the tournament by the deadline of Feb. 10 at noon, contact recreation@kentville.ca or call 902-679-2539.
