Shelburne County -  There’s a noticeable void between Pubnico and Liverpool when it comes to Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers and adults who lead them.

Leaders in the Yarmouth area are hoping to rectify that and are encouraging others to volunteer.

“There seems to be a lot of interest, so we’re hoping it takes off,” said Yarmouth Pathfinders leader and outgoing western district commissioner Crystle George.

“Hopefully we’ll get some leaders in that county. That’s always the hard part and all of our units need leaders,” she said.

The Yarmouth unit is hoping to get at least Sparks and Brownies started in the Barrington/Shelburne area and to continue on from there.

George, who has been involved with Girl Guides for close to 15 years, says her years as a volunteer have been a rewarding experience.

“Just to see the girls grow and change over the years,” she said.

She’s seen them blossom from shy, quiet youngsters to confidant, capable young women.

If the girls sign up and stick with it, there are many opportunities as they get older, she says.

“Pathfinders can apply for opportunities to travel. We had girls go to Alberta last year for a national camp. We have one girl this summer who is going to Switzerland on a Girl Guide sponsored trip.”

The organization is constantly changing to make sure things are up-to-date for the girls, she adds.
