Nine teams of six firefighters participated in a simulated extrication exercise, with a live victim trapped in a vehicle on Oct. 1 and 2.

Halifax Regional Team 1 came out on top, with a combined top score from both unlimited and limited pit runs.

Jason Cochrane, with the Brooklyn Fire Department, co-chaired the event as part of the hosting fire department.

“This is a regional qualifying competition, where the top two teams go to the nationals, which are going to be held in Enfield next year,” Cochrane said. “It’s been a great weekend for it, despite the rain today.”

The Transport Emergency Response Committee Canada judges the event, scoring on safety, education, tool usage and other factors.

“We have members coming who have never competed before, with several teams this year who are brand new to it,” he said. “This weekend we’ve been complimented on what they’ve learned, what they’re taking away from this and what they can add to their training.”

Cochrane said vehicle extrication is one of the more sensitive procedures firefighters perform on any given day, where time is of the essence.

“There’s no bragging rights here, nobody has outshone anybody else, everyone has helped each other,” he said. “There are no secrets to the trade, no special techniques, we’re all doing the same job. It is a competition, but it’s focused on the learning aspect.”

Cochrane said one skillset a lot of members will take away from the compeition is what tools are most efficient for the job.

The teams that participated were Island Barrington Volunteer Fire Department, Wood’s Harbour Volunteer Fire Department, Halifax Fire (two teams), Westville Fire Department, Pugwash Fire Department, Rawdon Fire Department, Moncton Fire and Wellsford, New Brunswick.

The Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department hosted the event at the Hants County Exhibition in Windsor.
