Valley theatre companies garner 13 nominations for Robert Merritt Awards

HALIFAX - Theatre Nova Scotia announced March 10 the nominees for the 2015 Robert Merritt Awards, with the Valley well-represented among the nominees.

The Merritt Awards are presented annually in celebration of excellence in professional theatre throughout Nova Scotia in the previous year - in this case, 2014.

Two Planks and a Passion Theatre, based in Ross Creek near Canning, received nine nominations, including Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role, Outstanding Original Score and Outstanding Direction.

Valley Summer Theatre, based in Wolfville, received two nominations, in the categories of Outstanding Supporting Performance and Outstanding Production.

Last but certainly not least, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, based in Windsor, also received two nominations for its newest production, Stella, Queen of the Snow.

Outstanding Performance by An Actor in a Leading Role - Female:

- Jamie Konchak, for her role as Joan in Dustbowl Joan (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Male:

- Ryan Rogerson, for his role of Harry in The Miracle Man (Two Planks and a Passion)

- Garry Williams, for his role of Old Ambrose in The Miracle Man (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Female:

- Burgandy Cole, for her role of Claire Thornton in The Miracle Man (Two Planks and a Passion)

- Stephanie MacDonald, for her role of Louise in Marion Bridge (Valley Summer Theatre)

Outstanding Costume Design:

- Jennifer Goodman, for The Miracle Man (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding Direction:

- Ken Schwartz, for Dustbowl Joan (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding Musical Direction:

- Allen Cole, for The Miracle Man (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding New Play by a Nova Scotian:

- Ken Schwartz (partially adapted from various sources), for Dustbowl Joan (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding Original Score:

- Steven Naylor, for Stella, Queen of the Snow (Mermaid Theatre)

- Allen Cole, for The Miracle Man (Two Planks and a Passion)

Outstanding Sound Design:

- Steven Naylor, for Stella, Queen of the Snow (Mermaid Theatre)

Outstanding Production by an Established Company:

- Marion Bridge (Valley Summer Theatre)
