KENTVILLE, NS – The federal government is investing more than a quarter of a million dollars in community centres in Kings and Hants counties.
Kings-Hants MP and President of the Treasury Board Scott Brison announced grants from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) for four community centres on Nov. 6.
The investments, totaling $282,508, are being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150).
“Our government recognizes that local community centres are highly valued in small rural communities,” Brison said. “These facilities are significant spaces for people to gather for cultural, recreational and social enrichment. They not only improve the quality of life for our families but strengthen the fabric of forward-looking, supportive communities across our region.”
The four projects being funded include a $60,000 contribution to the Woodville Community Centre to expand the building so a fitness room can be enlarged and a meeting room can be added. The Municipality of the County of Kings is contributing $40,000 to the project.
A $38,106 grant to the Kingsport Community Association will be used to upgrade waterfront facilities and enhance visitor experiences. The existing boardwalk will be replaced, the parking area will be upgraded and interpretive signage will be added. A new generator will also be installed at the Kingsport Lloyd Memorial Comfort Centre.
The Municipality of the County of Kings is providing $15,385 and is making a $10,000 in-kind contribution. The community association is investing $2,721 in the project.
A $109,402 grant to the Glooscap First Nation will be used to renovate the interior of the Glooscap First Nation Band Hall. This project will extend the life of the multi-purpose facility, which serves as a community hall, band administration office and council chambers. Glooscap First Nation is also investing $109,402 in the project.
A $75,000 contribution has been made to the Rawdon District Volunteer Fire Department. This will be used to renovate the fire hall and Rawdon Community Centre. The upgrades will enhance the centre’s accessibility and functionality as a vital community service and gathering place. The Municipality of East Hants is matching the federal contribution.
Projects supported by the CIP 150 program are chosen based on assessment criteria including construction-readiness and public benefit, the extent to which funding from other sources can be leveraged and linkages to Canada 150.
