Bean’re is piloting his Share the Wind project, which involves him, his bike and a sidecar touring with other bikers to assisted living centres to give rides in the sidecar and on other motorcycles to the people who live there.
It’s a project he holds dear since he believes the riding experience should be available to everyone.
“Being on a motorcycle and feeling the freedom it gives you is something everyone should experience at some point in their lives,” he said.
Getting excited about helping
This project is what Bean’re is most excited for at this year’s rally.
He recalled an 80-year-old woman he visited in Clare as part of the tour, who wanted to sit in the sidecar.
The woman was blind, and had never been in or on a motorcycle before. After a little coaxing, she agreed to go for a spin, and fell in love with it.
“It’s just all about the people. It’s exciting for them, but also for me because I get to put a smile on their face,” said Bean’re.
“It makes their day and mine as well. It’s a win-win.”
An ambassador of awesome
In addition to the tours he will lead, Bean’re is involved in all things Wharf Rat, always seen with his famous hat on his head.
He’s been coming since it kicked off in 2004, but had his first introduction to Digby one year earlier on his way to Halifax.
“I was struck by this cute little town and its people,” he said.
“And now, having met and made friends with so many here, I love this place even more than I did then. This rally is something special.”
Why he comes back year after year
Bean’re travels the world on his motorcycle, having ridden through places from Alaska to Asia.
He’s been almost everywhere yet still holds Digby close to his heart, as the place where he’s made so many memories and, most recently, where his Share the Wind project took off, which will reach six care facilities this rally.
He said people in Digby coming outside and greeting the bikes as they drive past is a novelty that doesn’t happen at most rallies.
“These people are my family,” he said.
“I’ll never outgrow this place.”
