BRIDGETOWN, NS - The Bridgetown & District Memorial Arena will be a lot more energy efficient with help from a grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
The announcement was made by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Infrastructure Canada in Saint John, N.B. July 5. The arena will receive $132,700 from the federation’s federally-funded Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program.
The Bridgetown Community Recreation Association, in partnership with Annapolis County, is undertaking a major efficiency upgrade to the arena to reduce power consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
“The County of Annapolis is pleased to be partnering with the Bridgetown Community Recreation Association to undertake this phase of upgrades to the arena,” said Warden Timothy Habinsky. “Active living and environmental sustainability are both priorities for our municipality.”
He said the county expects to see a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption when the project is complete.
“This will contribute in a positive way to the county’s goal to produce 80 per cent of the energy consumed in Annapolis County by 2050.”
The Project
The installation of new spray-foam insulation and a new seasonal controller will complement previously completed upgrades to lighting and space heating with the ultimate goal of providing an energy efficient, year-round recreation facility for Bridgetown and the surrounding communities.
The project uses a combination of efficiency upgrades, including physical equipment and upgrades to the buildings electrical systems, empirical data collection, and industry-standard modeling software.
This project also provides an opportunity to promote active living among residents and showcase the environmental and socioeconomic benefits of energy efficiency upgrades on a prominent public facility.
Other projects funded in the July 5 announcement include the City of Saint John’s large-scale energy retrofit to the historic City Market, and a new multi-purpose sports, wellness and recreation facility in Saint John.
