KENTVILLE, NS - A Hantsport man who abused a small dog on video and was originally charged under the Criminal Code has pleaded guilty to a lesser, included offence.
Jonah Edward Woodman, 26, was originally charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with willfully causing unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal, a pug. Woodman was present in Kentville provincial court on Jan. 17 and pleaded guilty to the lesser, included offence of unlawfully causing an animal to be in distress under the Animal Protection Act of Nova Scotia. He was fined a total of $460.
Woodman committed the offence in Kentville on Aug. 15, 2016. He was charged after the SPCA received what was described in a January 2017 news release as a “disturbing video” of the abuse of a small dog. The accused is not the owner of the dog, a tan-coloured pug.
In an earlier interview, Nova Scotia SPCA chief inspector Jo-Anne Landsburg said the fact that the abuse was captured on video made the incident especially disturbing.
A concerned citizen came in contact with the video and sent it to the SPCA. Investigators tracked down Woodman and he was charged.
