KENTVILLE, NS - A Kingston man charged with several offences after a glass display case at the Greenwood Walmart was smashed with a hammer in April will serve time in custody.

Corey Ryan Graves, 32, was sentenced to a total of six months and four days in custody on July 23 after changing his pleas to guilty to three charges stemming from the April incident at the Greenwood Walmart and three unrelated offences.

Graves changed his pleas to guilty to charges of stealing property valued at less than $5,000 from Walmart; willfully damaging the property of Walmart to a value not exceeding $5,000 and having his face masked with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Judge Christopher Manning sentenced Graves to six months in custody on the charge of stealing property from Walmart, which was converted to 184 days. Graves spent 70 days remanded in custody and was given credit for 102 days, leaving 82 days to serve.

He was sentenced to one month in custody, to be served consecutively, for willfully damaging the property of Walmart. The court granted a standalone restitution order for $1,084.57.

Graves was sentenced to another month in custody, to be served consecutively, for having his face masked with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Graves was also sentenced to 15 months of probation on each charge, to be served concurrently.

The court granted a forfeiture order for items seized. A charge of possessing a hammer under his clothes suitable for the purpose of breaking into a secure glass storage unit was dismissed on July 23.

Police were called to a theft in progress at the Greenwood department store on April 19 at 9:53 a.m. A suspect was using a hammer to break glass display cases and stealing items inside.

When police arrived at the scene, the suspect had fled in a small black car. A short time later, RCMP officers located the car and arrested the two occupants without incident. The vehicle was seized.

RCMP Forensic Identification Technicians were called to the scene to assist with collecting evidence. No one was injured during the incident.

Graves changed his pleas to guilty to other unrelated offences on July 23, including possession of stolen property of a value not exceeding $5,000 in Kingston on May 11 and failing to comply with his recognizance in Kingston on May 15.

Graves was sentenced to 30 days in custody for possessing stolen property, to be served consecutively, and was sentenced to 30 days in custody, to be served concurrently, for failing to comply with his recognizance. Graves was sentenced to 15 months of probation on each charge, to be served concurrent to the other 15-month term of probation already imposed.

A charge of breaking and entering a residence in Kingston between May 9 and 10 with intent to commit an indictable offence therein and a charge of failing to comply with his recognizance in Kingston on May 15 were dismissed on July 23.

Graves also changed his plea to guilty on July 23 to a charge of failing to comply with his recognizance in Kingston on May 14 by failing to observe curfew and remain in his residence between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. He was sentenced to 15 days in custody, to be served consecutively, and 15 months of probation, to be served concurrently.
