SPRINGHILL – RCMP are confirming two people were found dead inside a Springhill home that was the scene of a fire Tuesday, but they’re not saying how they died.
“At this point, given the fire (is) deemed suspicious until proven otherwise, it is being treated as a crime scene,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dal Hutchinson said early Wednesday. “Autopsies are being performed today to determine the cause of death.”
Hutchinson said officers will be talking to people in the neighbourhood as part of the investigation to try to determine what led up to the fire, but stressed it’s still too early to say if there are any suspects or if foul play is suspected.
Cumberland District RCMP responded to the fire on Beaton’s Lane in Springhill just before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday after Springhill firefighters located the remains of two people inside the home while extinguishing a fire.
The ages, genders and identities of both remains cannot be confirmed at this time.
“We are looking at the cause of the fire,” Hutchinson said. “We’re trying to piece it together. That’s where major crimes comes in. There’s very little more we can say at this time.”
The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner's Service and the Office of the Fire Marshall are assisting the RCMP with the investigation.
The RCMP's Northeast Nova Major Crimes Unit is investigating this matter, which is ongoing.
