WINDSOR, N.S. — A Hants County man facing multiple sex-related charges involving minors has been remanded into custody until the new year.
Myles Walter Card, 24, was at the Hants County Courthouse on Dec. 5, 2017 for a bail hearing, but was remanded into custody until Feb. 6, 2018.
It’s anticipated Card will enter a plea at that time.
Card’s lawyer, Jim White, consented to the remand on his client’s behalf.
White said the defence is interested in hearing the outcome of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court ruling involving Carolyn Amy Hood.
Hood was convicted of sexual offences relating to teenage boys in 2016. At sentencing, the trial judge did not dole out the mandatory minimum sentence, opting instead for a lesser sentence. The Crown appealed, and Hood’s lawyer, Joel Pink, cross-appealed. The case was heard on Sept. 26, 2017. The verdict has yet to be rendered.
“It challenges the efficacy of mandatory minimums in the criminal code for certain offences. There are a couple of charges that my client has against him that are subject to mandatory minimums and it’s important for us to know whether that concept survives,” said White of why they’re interested in the Hood ruling.
Card, who was previously charged in a bawdy house scheme in 2015, is now facing several charges, including sexual assault, sexual touching, administering a stupefying drug to assist him in committing a sexual assault, and luring, with telecommunications equipment, four alleged victims who are under 16-years-old.
The charges are alleged to have happened in Windsor between Aug. 15, 2017 and Nov. 8, 2017.
Card previously received a period of probation due to his connection with a bawdy house operation in Windsor, which was mainly led by his former roommate Justice Treyvon Hunter, who is currently serving time in a federal penitentiary.
The court has imposed a publication ban to protect the identities of the alleged victims.
Card is charged with two counts of endangering the life of a person in committing a sexual assault, thereby committing an aggravated sexual assault; two counts of sexual touching involving a person under the age of 16; two counts of invitation to sexual touching involving a person under age 16; two counts of administering a stupefying drug with intent to assist him to commit sexual assault; possessing cannabis for the purpose of trafficking; two counts of luring a person under age 18 for a sexual purpose; trafficking in a substance held out to be cannabis; administering a noxious substance — laced marijuana — with intent to aggrieve a person, and failing to comply with a condition of his probation, which was to abstain from the use and possession of non-prescribed drugs.
The charges have not been proven in court.
